We Have a Plan

I felt so encouraged after our meeting with the lawyer yesterday. It was if she was the person, we've been trying to find all along. She laid out a plan of action and discussed the possiblities both positive and negative with us. It was so refreshing to have someone say, "Here's what we're going to do." So now for the plan.

Step 1- Get a TN court to give us an order of deprivation. Basically that means we need them to say a.) her parents abandoned, abused, or neglected the child; b.) it's not in her best interest to go back; c.) she is eligible for long term foster care. On the forefront, the lawyer doesn't think any of those will be a problem. (as a side note, we would be her long term foster care)

Step 2- File the application for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status. Once it's approved we get her green card and when she has that we can do a TN adoption.

The one issue that concerns us most is that TN has to give notice to the birth mother about the proceeding. Hopefully, when she's notified, she won't decide to fight. It doesn't mean she will win if she does, it just complicates things.

So we are going to have a team of attorneys: an immigration attorney, a TN adoption attorney, an attorney in Mexico (don't worry Jeff & I aren't picking this one : ), and an attorney in FL who will be used for consultation in case the birth mother tries to claim abduction.

For the first time in years, I think this might just work out. I am still praying, but at least for now, I don't feel like it's still raining.

Another comment from me! Just checking to see how you're doing on your reading. I finished the fourth book at 2:00 a.m. this morning. I will say it was my least favorite book! We'll have to discuss it on Tuesday!
