We were referred to an immigration attorney by our adoption attorney. I spoke with her yesterday and here's the gist.Since the Hague Treaty changed on April 1, it's really going to complicate things. Basically, she said that the treaty has always been in place, but since April 1 they have now decided to start enforcing intercountry adoptions to protect the child and birth mothers from baby trafficking. If we had a valid I-600 before April 1 then we could proceed under the old status, but I am sure ours isn't valid anymore, so we will have to go with the new enforcement.
So, we will have to convince Mexico, U.S. and the birth mother that it's in Hannah's best interest to allow this to go through. She wants to meet with us to determine if we have a Hague treaty case or not. She needs to look at all the paperwork and see if she is the right attorney for the case. If not she has two referrals, but they are out of state. She said if she had to refer us to them, she would be the point person here for us.
I set a meeting for May 9 at 2:00 which was the best time for her. It's going to be $300. Start praying, because I have no idea where God's going to provide that from.I am feeling a little overwhelmed.
